Caersws continued their recent
rich vein of form, following on from Tuesday evenings victory over T.N.S.,
with a comfortably and very satisfying 4 - 1 win over a disappointing Cwmbran
Town outfit managed by ex-Newtown manager Brian Coyne.
The opening goal came in the third
minute when Kevin Scott's long throw from the right found Andy Marfell at the
back post, Marfell finishing clinically by putting the ball past keeper Gareth
Wesson, on loan to Cwmbran from Newport County.
On 13 minutes Chris Venables had
an 18 yard shot go narrowly wide, but four minutes later Caersws increased
their lead when Kevin Scott won the ball in midfield, before advancing and
crossing a superb ball into the path of Graham Evans for him to score from the
edge of the box.
Cwmbran had an opportunity after 23
minutes, when wing-back Terry Green crossed from the right, but it was
deflected over for a fruitless corner by a Caersws defender. Caersws continued
to have the upper hand, and after 34 minutes a tremendous 25-yard effort from
Kevin Scott was deflected towards the Cwmbran goal but keeper Wesson produced
an excellent save, pushing the ball over the bar with his fingertips. The
Crows had more of the possession during the remainder of the half, and pulled
one back on the stroke of half-time when Jason Perry guided in Richard
Hurlin's well-flighted free kick.
Following manager Mike Evans'
half-time exhortations Caersws returned to completely dominate the second
half, with Cwmbran rarely given any opportunities to get back into the game.
On 49 minutes a cross from the
left by Kevin Scott was hooked wide by midfielder Geraint Lewis, and four
minutes later the Bluebirds virtually sealed the game when the rock solid
defender Colin Reynolds played a high cross-field ball into the Cwmbran
penalty area, from where it was headed back into the path of Andy Davies who's
superb well controlled low strike on the edge of the area flew past Wesson
into the corner of the net.
Cwmbran had a reasonable opportunity
after 58 minutes, but Adam James blazed well over from 12 yards following a
left wing cross. Caersws continued to pummel the Cwmbran defence, with Chris
Venables having two shots saved by Wesson within minutes of each other. With
Cwmbran permanently on the back foot, rarely able to get out of their own
half, Caersws keeper Andy Mulliner should have been charged entrance for he
was virtually a spectator throughout the half.
On 76 minutes Kevin Scott's
floated free kick from the right was headed back by the impressive Hugh Clarke
into the path of sub Jamie Davies, who rocketed his effort over the bar.
The icing on the Bluebirds cake
arrived in the 81st minute when Graham Jones released Graham Evans inside his
own half with a superb through ball. The striker advanced towards the
undefended keeper, drawing him out and placing a low shot past him into the
corner of the net to clinch a thoroughly deserved victory for the Bluebirds,
consolidating their 6th place in the league and giving them a bit of breathing
space. This match, together with Tuesday's, will set them up nicely for next
Friday's derby against Newtown.
