A review of the action in the Principality Welsh Premiership from Friday 10th November. It was a mixed evening in the mud, the Ravens won at Llandovery but Ponty lost at Stradey. For details read on

Llandovery 28 Bridgend 29

The Western Mail

BRIDGEND won an exciting game by one point to record their hardest-fought win.

It was anybody's game and it Llandovery's ill discipline in the first half that cost them dearly.

After taking a first-minute lead with a darting try from wing Viv Jenkins, the Drovers committed fault after fault to allow Bridgend full-back Gareth David to kick five angled penalties in a 15-minute period.

The Drovers were 28-22 up, but they then conceded a penalty try for collapsing a Bridgend maul on their own line and in a tense finale, neither side could break down desperate defences.

Press reports suggest that Llanelli made good use of the conditions in the first half, and we had little to offer in return when the elements were with us in the second.

The Llanelli forwards dominated possession with the wind at their backs, and scrum-half Lee Williams, prop Phil John and wing Craig Richards all crossed the Ponty line. Daniel Evans showed excellent kicking form in the driving rain, converting all three tries as well adding a penalty hat-trick.

In the second half we failed to make similar headway with the wind in our favour. When replacement flanker Tu Tamarua was yellow-carded the home side made it count as prop Shaun Hopkins was driven over from short-range. All we could manage was a late consolation try by hookerv Richard Emms, converted by Dai Flanagan.

A fuller report will follow once the writer has had a chance to chat to those who were there - provided that they can bear the pain!
