Bridgend made the relatively short trip to Sardis Road
expecting a fierce battle with the team they are set to join forces with
next season. However, all they were faced with was a largely Pontypridd
second team which didn't really care about the game. This was reflected in
the woeful display from the Ponty players although to Bridgend's credit,
they are taking the Welsh League seriously this season and so they deserve
to win it.
There was nothing for Pontypridd to play for but in the opening stages they had their fair share of possession and territory. However, Bridgend clearly showed their intentions to win the game and maintain their 100% record in the league by scoring three first half tries. Craig Richards, Paul Jones and Phil Booth crossed before the interval, Cull converting twice. In the second half Ponty came out and started the half well. Bryant broke through the defence to cross under the posts for a try converted by Davey but they were to be the only points that Ponty scored. Bridgend crossed for a fourth try after a clever chip through by Gareth Cull for him to pounce on a score a try which he also converted. The scoreboard read 26 - 7 towards the end of the game and when Bridgend were awarded a penalty at the end they opted for a kick at goal as it may have been the last kick of the match. However, Cull missed with is long range attempt but all was not lost as Ponty decided to run the ball out of defence but they lost the ball and gifted Mike Powell a try which was converted by Cull to produce a final score of 33 - 7 in favour of Bridgend.
