The Celtic Warriors was one of five new regional professional rugby teams to start the season in Wales. The club was born after a controversial merger between Pontypridd and Bridgend. Off the field, the headlines were about board-room feuds but on the field, the Warriors were a success They finished in the top four of the Celtic League and were the only team to beat the European Champions, Wasps, in the Heineken Cup. Despite that, their first season was also to be their last.

The Warriors benefactor Leighton Samuel was bought out by the Welsh Rugby Union, and the team wound up. The players were scattered around Wales and beyond. A rugby academy packed with future stars was closed and fans in the valleys were left without a top class team to follow. Now the Warriors’ former directors say they’re prepared to sue the Welsh Rugby Union over what happened.
