"It is now time for me to take on a fresh challenge and I am very excited to begin a new chapter racing for the Mercedes Formula 1 team," said Hamilton.
"Mercedes-Benz has such an incredible heritage in motorsport, along with a passion for winning which I share.
"Together, we can grow and rise to this new challenge. I believe that I can help steer the Silver Arrows to the top and achieve our joint ambitions of winning the world championships."
Hamilton's career has been supported by Mercedes and McLaren for many years, having driven with Mercedes-Benz engines in the Formula 3 Euro Series and during his whole F1 career at the Woking team.
"I am delighted to welcome Lewis Hamilton to our team," said Mercedes boss Ross Brawn. "The arrival of a driver of Lewis' calibre is a testament to the standing of Mercedes-Benz in Formula 1 and I am proud that Lewis shares our vision and ambition for the success of the Silver Arrows.
"I believe that the combination of Lewis and Nico will be the most dynamic and exciting pairing on the grid next year, and I am looking forward to what we can achieve together."
Rosberg and Hamilton were team-mates in 2000 at TeamMBM.com in Formula A karting.
After the news was announced, Rosberg tweeted: "Very cool that Lewis will be my new team-mate! Going to be another great challenge."

Now we can move forwards as a proper racing team with a top driver not prat around like a weekend hobby team.
Hamilton will push and push. Gooooooooooooo MGP
At the outset Hamilton showed amazing ability but has also shown some serious character flaws.

I am sure that someone at one of the squads will find a desk for him to sit behind so that he can try his hand at the business/management end of the sport.

I have been wondering why schumacher didn't announce his latest retirement yesterday before the hamilton news was released, maybe Mercedes didn't give him the chance or maybe he wants to stay and wouldn't agree to play ball. It occurred to me that this is the second time that schumacher has been "retired" by his team.
My hunch is that the Hamilton deal was done on instruction from Stuttgart, them realising that the MS thing was a failure and Ross + MS didn't have much of a say.
I have a lot of confidence in LH to produce the goods, now, lets give him a great car.

And to the JV comment...nothing wrong with only having one title. There are a number of great drivers who only have one, and many more who were never able to achieve that. I think Lewis is not done, though...even though I find him to be a big baby. He does have a ton of talent...
What about rumoured Lewis nr. 1 status guys? I hoped Nico was the one who gets the job done. With MS they seemed to have the same possibilities. And i hoped the samee with Lewis?
Well i am ok with it if Merc starts to win. Races and titles.
Nico is proven Mercedes race winner. And we all know the team failed to stay in the peak of performance rather than nico dropped the ball. So i hope this doesnt mean hard times for Nico.
But hey. I beleive the status thing is only rumour!!!
Bring it on.
And thank you MS for 3 interesting seasons!!!!

More good news!
The FIA potentially turning it's back on the types of engines that the auto manufacturers are increasingly going to need in order to stay in business is 'good news'?
... Well; it sure could prove to be for IndyCar, where they already use turbo-V6s - and they sound just fine, thank you very much!

Hopefully as the season closes Michael will go out with some positive results.
Nico will go back to being Nico and have to prove his worth against his well known advisory.
We as fans will be looking forward to having Lewis on board and watching this competition unfold.
Go Mercedes Go !

Lauda makes a move to poach Newey from Red Bull claims Marko
Austrian triple world champion Lauda, having negotiated Mercedes’ new Concorde Agreement and wooed Lewis Hamilton to the German squad, has also joined the team as non-executive chairman.
And according to Red Bull’s Dr Helmut Marko, “Herr Lauda has been looking into how long Adrian Newey still has a contract with us”, he is quoted by Bild newspaper.
Austrian Marko said Newey has not been Mercedes’ only target.
“They also wanted to have Vettel,” he alleged
