1st April: Villeneuve Retires From F1!!!

In a shocking move announced today by Lucky Strike BAR Honda, Jacques Villeneuve is to retire from Formula 1 with immediate effect and become a 'Driver Mentor', working initially with BAR team mate Jenson Button.
Apparently irritated by four years of uncompetitive machinery, and seeing no big-money contracts available for 2004, JV has decided to take a back seat to try and push the team forward.
Working closely with Jenson Button will allow their deep friendship to flourish further, and could provide a big step in performance from the English driver.
It also gives ex-Jordan racer Takuma Sato the opportunity to race in F1 again, as he'll be filling JV's seat from Brazil until the British Grand Prix. There are then plans, according to team boss David Richards, to replace Takuma with Anthony Davidson, giving BAR the best opportunity to evaluate both drivers.
Speaking of his decision, JV said: "This has been a long time coming. With four years of unrealistic targets I'm worn out and, combined with the radio failure at Melbourne and the engine failure at Malaysia, I think it's time to call it a day. Working as a mentor will enable me to influence F1's future champions, and I can't see a better candidate than my close friend Jenson Button."
David Richard, team manager, commented: "While it came as a surprise, I fully support Jacques decision. I'd like to pay full tribute to the guy - without him we wouldn't be where we are now. Given the circumstances, I don't think there's another driver who would have performed like Jacques. Any driver would be lucky to get him to work for them."
Jenson Button enthused: "Wow. Now I'll have the opportunity to really get into Jacques head, which can only make e stronger. With the new rules I feel that 2004 could be my year, as I'm feeling fitter than ever before."
UPDATE 1 April 2003: It has now been announced that Jacques Villeneuve has had a change of heart and will remain a driver for BAR Honda. Something to do with the date. Probably.
