When it was announced that Jenson Button was to join BAR for 2003, pitpass.com editor Chris Balfe asked the (then) Renault driver to clarify the situation regarding WilliamsF1, since some F1 insiders were of the opinion that the English youngster retains a connection with the Grove outfit.
At that time he asked Jenson if he could shed light on claims that he has a contract that give him the right to demand a seat with WilliamsF1.
"That's not exactly what I said," he replied. "The problem is that I can't really talk about contracts. I would love to but I can't. It's a thing which is in the contract that says I can't!" and with that he started laughing.
In other words - he's free, but then again he's not, furthermore he has a contract which forbids him talking about his contracts.
Well Jenson will be delighted to know that his former boss Frank Williams was watching on Sunday and was delighted with what he saw. Although he missed out on a podium spot, the youngster put on a mighty impressive show.
"I was watching Jenson's progress from the start of the season with more than a little interest," Williams told The Guardian. "Initially I was a little worried that it wasn't happening for him," he added, "but as he and his new team started to work closely together he has come on strongly. That drive in Austria was a first-rate performance."
It was Frank, it was.
We wonder if Jacques is impressed however.
