But this time it was in the wet. The Japanese Lucky Strike BAR Honda driver was at Jerez driving on an artificially dampened circuit, completing 102 laps of wet running on Michelin tyres.
As is becoming the norm, the team managed to pull out all the stops and top the time sheets, despite having to face difficulties with their suspension geometry. Problems with parts in transit meant the new BAR 006 was running on suspension designed for Bridgestone tyres.
The only other team in attendance was Williams, with Montoya ending up just under a second behind Sato's time of 1:25.758. Williams returnee Antonia Pizzonia was a further 2 seconds back.
