Williams stake their claim on Jenson Button

Williams Grand prix have submitted their contract with Jenson Button to the F1 Contracts Recognition Board, just hours ahead of a press conference to be held by the Lucky Strike BAR Honda driver.

Williams have had Jenson under some sort of contract since 2000, even during his years at Benetton/Renault and BAR. The latest submission is for his services in 2005 and beyond, services that BAR's team chief David Richards are sure breach the existing contract BAR have with the driver.

Ultimately, BAR cannot force Button to remain with the team, as this breaches European employment laws, but can prevent him from joining a rival operation. Even if the CRB rules in BAR's favour, the best solution the team could hope for is a substantial compensation package from Grove based Williams.

Jenson's attempted departure has unsettled BAR, causing problems with Honda, existing sponsors, and even causing some potential new sponsors to consider their involvement more carefully. More critically, it also leaves a spare seat with the team for 2005, with most current drivers already signed up elsewhere.
