John McGuinness breaks the Ulster GP lap record

John McGuinness, aboard his HM Plant Honda riding at the Ulster Grand Prix, broke the lap record to leave it standing at 3min 24.236secs, after previously breaking the former record twice. This has set a lap speed of 130.455mph, the first time that 130mph has been set for the Dundrod Circuit.

His accomplishment is an astounding one, as he has attained the ultimate triple by breaking the lap record, recording the fastest ever lap and taking pole position all in one session. John said he felt he was held up on his fastest lap, so it looks even more likely that the record may well be broken again come race day.

Guy Martin was first to break the lap record until John went onto the track, but Guy still remains a contender, as does Ian Hutchinson - who incidentally is fighting off a flu virus but was still able to attain a good fourth position. With Raymond Porter in third, we could be in for a titanic battle for the honours.
