Prescot Cables vs. Leigh Genesis preview

Tomorrow evening (Tuesday) sees Genesis make the short trip to Merseyside to take on rivals Prescot Cables in a UniBond Premier League encounter that is vital not only for the bragging rights, but also as both sides look to climb the table towards safety.

Although Leigh have as many as nine games in hand on some of their league rivals, Saturday's 4-0 defeat to promotion-chasing Eastwood Town at Clitheroe saw the Leythers sent in to the bottom four for the first time this season, and in particularly heartbreaking fashion as all four goals arrived in the final twenty minutes of an absorbing encounter.

Basement side Prescot were defeated 2-0 at Gigg Lane on Saturday as FC United of Manchester, the first visitors to the Leigh Sports Village Stadium in a week's time, continued their climb up the table, though Cables' previous outing to that was an incredible 6-3 victory away to Merseyside rivals Marine.

The two sides last met in September 2008 when, in atrocious weather conditions in front of over 200 spectators at Hilton Park, strikes from the now-departed Jordan Stepien and Josh Wilson gave Leigh a deserved 2-1 victory.

Since then, of course, Leigh's side is a much-changed one but, despite Saturday's result, boss Lee Merricks had plenty of positives to take from the encounter as his young team, with an average age of eighteen, got another ninety minutes of UniBond Premier League experience under their belts, while the likes of Phil Marsh and Nick Linford continue to impress with their new club.

Admission at Valerie Park is £7 for adults, £4 for concessions and £2 for children, with kick off at 7:45pm.

Supporters travelling from Leigh should do so via the East Lancashire Road, to it's junction with the A570 (Rainford bypass), taking the first right on Bleak Hill Road and following it round in to Prescot. Those travelling by car are reminded that there are ongoing roadworks on the East Lancashire Road between Leigh and Lowton and, as such, should leave extra time for their journey if possible.
