Leigh Genesis vs. Worksop Town preview

Radcliffe Borough's Stainton Park home provides the venue on Saturday afternoon when Leigh Genesis take on old adversaries and fellow basement battlers Worksop Town.

Just three points currently separate the sides in the UniBond Premier League table, with Tuesday's 2-0 defeat to FC United of Manchester in front of over 1,300 spectators at the Leigh Sports Village Stadium sending Genesis to the bottom of the table, although they have a whopping seven games in hand on third-bottom Worksop.

The two sides last met in late August at Hucknall's Watnall Road home when, despite a spectacular Darren Mansaram goal, Worksop scored two second half goals to take all three points.

Worksop's last away fixture with Leigh was a particularly disappointing afternoon for them as two first half Dan Owen goals secured a 2-1 Hilton Park victory in April 2007 that secured Leigh's Conference North safety for the following season and condemned Worksop to the UniBond Premier League.

Loan signing Chris Thompson is likely to make his Genesis debut after signing from Blue Square Premier side Barrow on a month's loan.

Both sides have struggled in front of goal recently, with Worksop's sole strike in their 3-1 League Cup defeat to Matlock Town in midweek being their first strike in over three hours of football, while Leigh haven't hit the net in their past four outings since scoring a late penalty at Ashton United in the League Cup nearly three weeks ago.

Saturday afternoon represents the third time this season that Stainton Park will host a Genesis 'home' fixture after Leigh defeated Frickley Athletic 2-0 in September, while Lee Merricks' side suffered a 3-2 Lancashire Trophy defeat, ironically to Radcliffe Borough, in December, with kick off at 3pm and normal admission prices applying.
