Witton Albion 2 Leigh Genesis 1

Saturday’s trip to UniBond League Division One South side Witton Albion was the first chance for Genesis manager Garry Flitcroft to assess his team against one of similar ability, and he will have been posed a number of questions after falling to a 2-1 defeat at Wincham Park.
Fresh from a 4-1 defeat to an impressive Bolton Wanderers Reserves in front of over 1,100 spectators at the Leigh Sports Village Stadium the previous Tuesday, Genesis continued with a 4-5-1 formation against a Witton side that joined Leigh in relegation from the UniBond Premier League last season.
Although the likes of Steve Settle, Andy Heald and Chris Page were missing from the Leigh side, the Baguley brothers, Chris and Jamie, continued in midfield, with Matt Jansen operating as a lone striker for the second game in succession.
Leigh fell behind on ten minutes, leaving them a goal behind at half-time before both sides, in traditional pre-season fashion, made a raft of substitutions. After their first choice goalkeeper suffered an injury, and with no substitute goalkeeper, Witton bizarrely had to ‘borrow' Genesis substitute goalkeeper Dean Porter to play the second half for the hosts and, after Witton went 2-0 ahead, Leigh pulled a goal back through Jordan Stepien.
Leigh's next pre-season game is against Blackburn Rovers Reserves at the Leigh Sports Village Stadium this Tuesday (28th July, 7:45pm) before a trip to face UniBond Premier League opposition in the shape of Kendal Town next Saturday (1st August, 3:00pm).
