AFC Fylde vs. Leigh Genesis preview

After Tuesday night's exhilirating penalty shoot-out victory over Atherton LR in the LFA Challenge Trophy, Genesis are back in league action tomorrow when they travel north to face AFC Fylde.

While last weekend's terrific 6-0 victory over rivals Prescot Cables lifted Leigh to fifth position in the UniBond League First Division North, hosts AFC Fylde, winners of the North West Counties Premier Division last season, have had a mixed campaign so far as they make their UniBond League bow, currently in fifteenth place though without a league fixture last weekend as they suffered a 5-0 defeat to UniBond Premier side Buxton in the FA Cup.

The hosts will have a caretaker manager in place for Saturday's fixture after first team coach Colin Methven and assistant Paul Eastwood left the club in midweek, despite leading the club to FA Vase and Vodkat Premier Division glory in recent years.

Although Saturday's meeting is the first ever competitive fixture between the sides, the two faced each in a pre-season friendly in July 2008 that saw Genesis 3-1 victors with goals from Andrew Teague, Jordan Stepien and Karl O'Donnell.

In the Leigh side that evening were Jerome Watt (below) and Danny Penswick, who are now with AFC Fylde after leaving Leigh last season with Penswick failing to make a competitive first team appearance, and cult figure scoring once in eleven Leigh appearances.

The array of ex-Leigh players on show is completed by former Bolton Wanderers striker Chris Downey, who appeared for Leigh in the Nationwide Conference earlier in the decade, while defender Matt Lawlor made eight appearances for Leigh, on loan from Blackpool, during the 2007/2008 season.

Kellamergh Park is in the Warton area, north of Preston, and can be reached via junction 3 on the M55, with the ground two miles from Wrea Green village and best marked by the neighbouring Birley Arms public house.

Kick off is at 3pm.
