Two second half goals ensured that Leigh Genesis maintained their unbeaten record at the Leigh Sports Village Stadium this season with victory over Trafford.
Despite dominating much of an entertaining encounter, Leigh had to wait until the hour mark to take the lead, and even then it was from the penalty spot as Chris Thompson converted his eighth goal of the season past goalkeeper Tom Read.
Six minutes later and Trafford were handed a huge blow in their search for an equaliser when James Rothel, a thirty second minute substitute for left back Lee Hargreaves was shown a red card. With eleven minutes remaining, he was followed down the tunnel by team mate Greg Hall, with Genesis, who had seen a Tom Ince goal chalked off earlier on, finally sealing victory over their nine-man opponents on eighty five minutes when seventeen year old midfielder Dale Whitham swept home his first ever senior goal, having made thirty one previous appearances.
The victory lifts Genesis in to sixth position in the UniBond League First Division North table, with a midweek trip to face Ashton Athletic in the Lancashire FA Co-Operative Challenge Trophy Second Round being followed by an away fixture against local rivals Prescot Cables next Saturday (14th November, 3pm kick off).
