Leigh Genesis vs. Atherton Collieries preview

Tuesday evening presents an intriguing tie in the Lancashire FA Co-Operative Challenge Trophy First Round as neighbours Leigh Genesis and Atherton Collieries fight it out at Crilly Park.

It marks the third of four consecutive cup ties for Leigh, with Genesis boss Mark Maddox hoping for an improvement on their past two outings that brought President's Cup and FA Cup exits at Skelmersdale United, 1-0 last Tuesday, and Norton & Stockton Ancients, 2-1, on Saturday.

Collieries make the short trip down Bolton Road in confident mood as they currently sit at the top of the Vodkat League First Division table with five wins, two draws and just one defeat from their opening eight games, scoring a whopping twenty five goals in the process and conceding just six. Bearing in mind their record, Maddox is far from complacent about the challenge that Genesis will face.

"This is a derby game so we need to make sure we are up for the battle, otherwise we will get turned over."

"I am looking to get more youth team lads involved in the first team set up as I have been really impressed with Craig (Carney) and James (Carey) who have been training with us recently and featured as substitutes in recent games."

"We just need to get back to winning games to get some confidence back and keep believing in what we are trying to do with the players."

Several of the Collieries side will prove to be familiar faces to the home support, with three former Leigh players in their line up. Captain Andy Walker has been with Colls for the past seven years but is a former Leigh player, while Rob Farrington and Joe Fielding are former Genesis youth players who made seven and four first team appearances respectively during the 2008/2009 season.

The two sides last met in December 2008 when, at the same stage of the same competition, a Leigh side featuring the aforementioned Fielding (pictured below) ran out 2-0 victors with a Sam Parkinson double, while last season saw Genesis go as far as the semi final stage of the competition before losing 3-1 to Clitheroe at Leyland's County Ground.

Kick off at Crilly Park on Tuesday evening (28th September) is at 7.45pm, with admission costing £7 for adults, £5 for over 65's/students and just £2 for under 18's. As this is a cup fixture, season tickets are unfortunately invalid and all supporters will be required to pay the appropriate admission cost.

Be good to get back on track, but Colls are on fire at the minute so we'll have to be on our guard to give it a good performance.
