Woodley Sports 1 Leigh Genesis 1

Leigh Genesis' recent resurgence in form continued in the Cheshire rain as Alan Kershaw's side extended their unbeaten run to three games with a point at mid-table Woodley Sports thanks to a debut goal from striker Stuart Rudd.

After coming within five minutes of defeating league leaders Chester in a 1-1 draw at a packed Crilly Park on Tuesday night, Kershaw made just one change to his side with Stuart Rudd brought in to replace youngster Craig Carney who was unavailable due to representing the Lancashire FA Under 18 side at the same time.

Hosts Woodley took the lead on twenty one minutes when Gary Furnival was left unmarked at a corner kick to head home past Phil Priestley to give new Woodley boss Chris Willcock the perfect start in his first game in charge of the Stockport club.

Sports held the lead at the break but were pegged back within eleven minutes of the restart when, in similar fashion to the home side's goal, Stuart Rudd was left unmarked at a Sam Fairhurst corner to head past Liam Higginbotham to level the scores on his debut after signing in midweek from Rhyl.

There was a controversial moment in the second half when the referee awarded a penalty to Leigh when Nathan McDonald was brought down in the area, only to change his mind when his assistant decided that he'd spotted a foul on a Woodley defender in the lead up to the foul on McDonald.

Genesis had chances to claim all three points in the second period but will be happy with a point that brings them within a point of second bottom Ossett Albion.

Leigh's next fixture is a home game this coming Tuesday against Mossley at Crilly Park (8th February, 7.45pm kick off) before a rare free weekend ahead of a visit to local rivals Prescot Cables the following Tuesday (15th February, 7.45pm).

yeah it sure is 1 point behind ossett, how we didnt end up winning the game with the attempts we had in the second half, and the penalty confusion was a farce

Let's take it as it comes and concentrate on catching Ossett.

Glad we've still got them to come to be honest as we definitely should have won at their place.
