Spooner departs from Hilton Park

Former Bolton Wanderers defender Nicky Spooner has left Leigh RMI to join former RMI manager Steve Waywell at Unibond Premier League basement side Hyde United.

Spooner has become the third RMI player to join Waywell at Ewen Fields as he looks for regular first team football at a lower level following a career blighted by several long term injuries.

Spooner famously badly broke his leg twice in two seasons while at Bolton and spent a lot of his time on the Hilton Park sidelines. Spooner joined RMI in 1998 before departing to America to play for Charlseton Battery. Spooner returned to Hilton Park last season but again was injured.

This term Spooner failed to make an impression on Steve Waywell and was loaned out to Unibond League side Radcliffe Borough for the first bit of the season. When Waywell was replaced by Spooner's former Bolton team mate Mark Patterson, Spooner hoped to be restored to the first team but again failed to impress the RMI manager and was frozen out of the first team. Spooner today signed a contract with Hyde which takes him to the end of the season.
