Airdrie 1 vs 0 Clyde

Airdrie put themselves back in the hunt for survival in the Irn Bru First Division with a one nil win against our nearest rivals Clyde. A Paul Di Giacomo goal, his tenth of the season, on five minutes secured the three points for the Diamonds.

Kenny Black changed his tactics for todays game, instead of 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 he chose to utilise Matt Hazely and Willie McLachlan as wing backs.

Robertson
Donnelly, Smyth, Nixon
McLachlan                             Hazely
McLaughlin, MacDonald, McKenna
Di Giacomo McGuire

I would also like to think that leaving Simon Lynch on the bench was tactical, starting with McGuire and Di Giacomo then replacing them with Baird and Lynch, basically he was pairing up youth and experience.

Whatever the case the important thing today was to come away from an important match with all three points.

When he was with us we knew the damage Willie McLaren could do to teams if he was up for it and today he seemed to be, his pace threatened at every opportunity. It took Matt Hazely's run through the middle of the park to help break the early dead lock, his pass found Di Giacomo   in space and his shot flew low into the back of the net. From where I was sitting it looked like it may have taken a deflection but in the end Airdrie were one nil up.

The rest of the half was a battle a tough  game for both sides that saw Clyde finally having a man sent off. Pat Clarke was dismissed for a dangerous foul on McKenna after the Airdrie midfielder won a 50 - 50 ball.

The second half saw a gutsy display by both teams, both clubs needed the points from the match and although it wasn't pretty Airdrie kept our one nil lead and put us back in the pack.

Some thoughts.....

Nixon's hand ball...if he fails at football then career in volleyball awaits.

Boabby at right back???????????????????????

The young rangers boy gets better every week....doubt we will be able to keep him.

Robbo was solid again with a couple of good saves.

Brown obviously cannot motivate a team without it involving ending a career....@#$%&!

Still not enough shots on goal!

Didn't catch the hand ball!!!

Don't think Boaby was right back just the right side of a back three.

McLachlan's excellent and looked just as comfortable as a wing back as he does at right back.

I agree with the lack of shots on goal, I think it was probably 8 - 3 in their favour.

Bit lucky to get away with all three points. Di Giacomo's strike did indeed take a deflection on the way in but was end of a good move involving Hazley and McDonald...not a bad goal. Thought we struggled to contain McLaren especially in first half and they should have done better than shoot pretty much straight at Robbo on a couple of occasions...that said keeper did well with his blocks.

Clyde sending off was a bit harsh...it was rash and ill-timed but he didn`t make any contact with McKenna and so thought it was only a booking.

Overall we played garbage for long periods struggling to sub-due 10 men but its the result that matters.

the challenge that burst the ball was surely worth a booking as well given your not allowed to show all your studs when you tackle???:
