SPL2 some thoughts

In reality no one has a clue how to save Scottish football and in truth it may not need saving at all just a new way of looking at things. Every club pays a fortune in wages and most live way beyond thier means but it may be time to look at the clubs who keep their books in order and promote them.

I'm more and more convinced that the problem lies in trying to compete with a market we have no business being in.

We simply cannot compete with England or the rest of Europe when it comes to paying wages, so cap them and develop our youth and Scottish players. Due to European law you cannot prevent foriegn players coming in to the country to earn a living but you can put them off by keeping the wages low.

So what do you want your team to achieve, is survival enough? Would playing in a league where everyone is on an equal footing be enough to revive your passion or your clubs fortunes? Can your club afford to say, bugger the SPL we don't need it we are going to get our own house in order first? The SFLjust like the SPL is now about preservation, but still every single chairman in the land is looking for that next big pay day just to keep the club afloat.

If St Johnstone get promoted and Inverness relegated, it will only mean that St Johnstones wage bill will sky rocket and their directors will hope and pray that visiting fans will cover that extra cost. It won't happen, but what will happen is that Inverness will be left with a massive wage bill and a black hole that won't be filled for years if they are lucky.

If SPL2 is to come about it has to be based on equality, fans have to be encouraged to attend games instead of just assuming they will turn up, the sructure has to be right, if it has to be said again I'll say it, 10 or 12 teams does not make a good competitive league.

Yes things have to change but if it's led by chairman whose only aim is preservation then they will never take the steps needed to restructure and secure a future for Scottish Football.

Self preservation and an amicable reorganisation of the leagues need not be in conflict. Many of us have been saying for years that the problem is value for money. The problem is the people who run the game and look at reorganising it can not see beyond the balance sheets. Time and time again people on this site and similar forums point out what has to be done, but our views dissapear in the ether. I do not think ther needs to be a radical shake up, just get the basics right. I am not happy about the Atlantic league idea however this maybe the necessary compromise with the OF having a team for each league.
