The Club can confirm that as from the 1st June 2013, we have reverted to the traditional name of Airdrieonians, and this will appear on the fixture lists for 2013/14.
There has a been a lot of work going on in the background to make this possible and clearance was recently received and all the governing bodies have now formally given their consent.
Chairman Jim Ballantyne explained, ‘When the old company went into liquidation, it was in a different football environment and the use of the name was not possible at that time. With all the recent changes however, and subsequent rulings, it paved the way for us to make the move and therefore we set the wheels in motion’.
He continued ‘It was actually raised at a fans meeting a few months ago but we could not give too much away as there was still much work to be done., However with the support of last year’s club sponsors. E & A Heating Ltd, we were able to progress matters to a conclusion and formal SFA clearance was finally granted at the recent meeting of the Professional Game Board’.
Further details regarding the change will be issued shortly.
Airdrieonians name returns.

Now the club need to do a proper re-launch....a proper pre-season friendly against some glamour opposition to mark a real re-birth!!! It would probably need a sponsor though to foot the costs of attracting a decent club so probably won't happen...but one can but dream. Always seemed a missed chance to me that Motherwell opened the stadium several months after it had actually opened and that our first opponents in it were the mighty York City.
Does this also mean we can now re-claim the history?
This would mean we can claim our full honours and records:
Airdrieonians:
Scottish Cup Winners: 1924 Runners Up: 1975, 1992, 1995.
Scottish Football League Runners up: 1922β23, 1923β24, 1924β25, 1925β26
Scottish Football League First Division: Winners: 1902β03, 1954β55, 1973β74
Scottish Football League Second Division: Winner: 2003-04
Scottish Challenge Cup: Winners: 1994β95, 2000β01, 2001β02,
2008-09. Runners Up: 2003-04 (making us the FIRST team to have won it 4 times...not the pretenders from Falkirk).

Fantastic news and a massive thank you to all involved I bringing this once great name back to our club.
Note:
Mr Chairman please give us a team to honour this name
(build it and they will come)
Mr Boyle you played for this team and know we were never the best in the land but we won games and no other team enjoyed the bruising encounters against the DIRTY DIAMONDS. Do us proud next season and give this club our pride back.
Superb news! Buzzing for the season to arrive now and I haven't said that about Airdrie in a long time. Will buy a season ticket, merchandise, the lot. I'm now finally able to say that I'm an Airdrieonians fan. The name change means so much to me and I wasn't even a fan of the original Airdrieonians (only saw one game due to my age) so I can't imagine what it must be like for all of you and the supporters of the club during the original Airdrieonians.
Well done to the club, Ballantyne, the supporter's trust, E & A Heating Ltd and all the others who were involved in making this happen.
This means so much for us old ones that have followed Airdrieonians for 45 plus years. Let's hope we can get a team that will fight for the badge liketheold days.
But thanks to all who made this happen
Brilliant news - well done to the club and sponsors. We have reclaimed our history, got rid of that horrific 'United'. Here's hoping we can get some sort of re-launch and get the community involved.
glesgadiamond Do we think we think this might see a crowd increase from last year? Now that our names back? Not soo sure love to be proven wrong though
Let"s hope so, but will also depend on how well the team does
Like my old team mate Spitzy, I can only say "Thank you" to the Board. Time to start saving up for my season ticket.
My first Airdrieonians season ticket was ten shillings (50p).
Any chance of the same price ?
AMAZING news....especially if as has been muted the badge is coming back too. NOW is the time to get the season ticket prices etc announced...NOW is the time to get decent merchandise in the club shop....NOW is the time to rebuild our club.
Now is also the time for me to change my signature after having it for 6 years. But happy to do so.
Brilliant news- when do the season tickets come out as I will be showing my approval by buying one? Some good Airdrieonians merchandise wouldn't go amiss either- 2 Lions & a chicken always looked good.
<> Excellent news - well done to Jim Ballantyne, everyone involved & the sponsors too for making this happen.
Would love to see the history/honours now credited to us as has been said - and a fighting team to recapture the days of old. Performances on the park will help the crowds, but there's no getting away from the fact that this is a boost for the fans, club & town and will be great to see this being built upon over the coming season and years... <>

This is excellent news, it should have a positive impact and be capitalised on by the club shop. It will be hard to assess the impact on attendances this coming season because of other factors, but let's hope it does result in some fans coming back to support the club in person. Well done Jim Ballantyne and Board.
Great news and well done to all involved, and to the trust for driving it forward. Going to buy a season ticket even though I won't make every home game to show my approval. Hopefully can get some Airdrieonians stuff in the club shop soon too. The news about the badge returning is the icing on the cake. Always hated the united badge and loved the Airdrieonians one as the one I grew up supporting. Still buzzing from this news.
first time I ever saw us on BBC red button in years and while I will buy new gear it will finally let me wear some of the old gear that's been in the cupboard which still, I think, fits me. I was buying the season ticket anyway despite all my moans about certain things last season but it feels so much better now. Well done Mr Chairman and others
No their scheduled to go sale 11th July.
Has goodwill gesture I paid for mine today.
We should also have some Airdrieonians merchandise in the shop by then.
Good to see Airdrieonians name. I always thought it was one of those great famous old football names like Third Lanark. Airdrieonians is quite a unique title whereas United is pretty common in football.
Remember plenty of Thistle v Airdrieonians games in the Premier League and hopefully some more in a couple of years time.

Italia90 This is all very well....but what do I do with my 'Airdrie Utd' tattoo???
<> Could you not go back to the tattoo artist and ask him to make it - "Airdrie Utd for Airdrieonians" - only 2 extra words and he should be able to squeeze it in... <>

Love it, cherish it and remember the glory days that spanned between 2002 and 2013............don't know what your going to do with the rest of your day though!

Put your arm in the oven at 225c for 30 minutes that should get rid of it. If that's too much hassle just get an axe and chop the arm off and put it in the clothes recycling bin at Morrisons. Done this a few times- the council workers always laugh when they find a random human arm in there when they are emptying it. So you'd be brightening up heir day as well.
Here to help
Happy that the name and badge have returned, but can't quite understand the level of hysteria this seems to have generated. However, as said already, if this brings back the fans who said they wouldn't return until this happened then that's great (but pretty sad they deserted the ship in the first place). I haven't seen it confirmed yet, but if we have our history back then that is really good. But a name and badge is unlikely to make much difference to our players who probably won't have a clue about the traditional Airdrieonians fighting spirit. Of much more interest to me is the team that is put on the park. Certainly compared to previous recent seasons we have got our act together much better. I quite like the signings made so far, although I didn't think that some of the players we had last season were as bad as Jimmy Boyle made them look. Still, we're stuck with him for the present.
Best news this club has had in a long time. Maybe now we can also get back the old Airdrieonians in being a decent side that people hated to play against, rather than an easy 3 points that most took us for.
