Sean's Shelter

During the last few years, most have us will have been uncomfortable at one time or another following the diamonds. Mainly watching journeymen sullying the reputation of the famous shirt they are wearing.

But a minority of fans are being denied the opportunity to come along to games because it is so uncomfortable for them. For disabled supporters, the current facilities at New Broomfield offer little respite from the wind, rain and perishing cold that characterises much of the season.

My son, Sean, is one of these fans. Sean is in a wheelchair and has very limited mobility. He has cerebral palsy and suffers from a heart condition which means his blood is not circulated well through his body – meaning he gets unbearably cold quickly.

Sean's health and faculties mean he has little opportunity to socialise or take part in the type of activities we take for granted. He does, however, particularly enjoy coming with me to watch Airdrie. He is stimulated and engaged at the games to an extent that we struggle to replicate elsewhere.

A shame, therefore, that he can only really come to matches at the very beginning and end of each campaign.

Now in the great scheme of things, we all realise Sean's plight is not earth shattering. There are more worthy causes and more pressing needs.

But we can and should be able to do something about this. To help people like Sean enjoy something they like in comfort.

After missing the last twenty minutes (and winning goal) of the home match against Brechin recently, I decided to test the water and find out how much support we may be able to gather to create a suitable shelter or facility within the stadium for disable fans. A throwaway comment on Facebook generated a very enthusiastic response. I was chuffed when quickly dozens of fans pledged help and support.

Members of the Trust committed to adding it to the agenda, others offered money and advice. So, I've set up a group on the site to co-ordinate our efforts. Sean and I would be delighted if you would join. We're not looking for anything other than your contribution to developing a plan. It might not change the world, or make watching Airdrie any more comfortable for the majority of us. But I know it will put a smile on one boy's face.
