After fighting their way to the finals of the United Schools Cup competition St Ambrose Vs St Margaret's had the makings of a terrific match and so it turned out.
With Sandy Stewart, Brian Prunty, Stephen McKeown and Kevin Barkey watching from the Directors box along side Ann Marie Ballantyne and Mr and Mrs Ballantyne the match had quite an audience.
St Margaret's started very strongly and were unlucky to go behind half way through the first half, as the ball broke through the centre of the St Maggies defence the two central defender missed the opportunity to clear the ball and St Ambrose took the opportunity and opened the scoring. St Ambrose dominated the mid0field for most of the game with some very nice one touch passing, but it was the power of St Margaret's that would bring them back in to the game.
A St Margaret's corner, that the St Ambrose keeper looked to have covered was bundled in to the back of the net. I have seen fouls given for those sort of headers but the St Margaret's defender won the ball cleanly and it was level pegging at half time.
The second half was much the same as the first, St Margaret's with all the pressure but none of the breaks. It took twenty-five minutes for another goal and once again, it was St Ambrose who scored. St Margaret's had a free kick inside the St Ambrose half that was cleared out of the box. As it was being fired, back in a St Ambrose mid-fielder blocked the ball and went on a run. Two - one to St Ambrose with a break away goal.
Although St Margaret's fought for the ball and tried very hard to get back in to the game it wasn't to be and St Ambrose go home to Coatbridge with the United schools cup for the second time in three years.
