Roughyeds !
By Nigel Vincent
February 22 2002

An easy victory for the Roughyeds against a Gateshead team which consisted of Alliance team and local amateur players. The only points Oldham conceeded came from a 7th minute penalty. Brian Henare stupidly got himself sent off for a trip on and looks likely to miss the match against Huddersfield...

MATCH REPORT

Gateshead's current financial problems meant that their team had to be made up from Allinace team and local amateur players. John Harbin named the same side that lost to Saints in the cup last week, Anthony Gibbons had recovered from injury and was named amongst the substitutes.

A good start from Thunder who pushed Oldham back throughout the opening minutes. When referee Presley awarded Gateshead a penalty in the seventh minute Neil Thornam elected to kick for goal. Roughyeds 0 Thunder 2

Oldham mde their usual poor start and were grateful that another Thornam penalty sailed wide of the posts. Oldham's first attack resulted in a try for Paul Norton and Braddish converted to put the home side in front by 6-2.

Gateshead then kept Oldham at bay until the nineteenth minute, Joe McNicholas received the ball from Jon Goddard and ran fifty yards to score. Sadly John Braddish missed the conversion. Roughyeds 10 Thunder 2

Four minutes later Jon Goddard scored a fine try for the Roughyeds but again Braddish failed to convert. Minutes later came a magnificent sixty yards run from McNicholas, who was stopped just feet from the try line by the Gateshead full-back Kevin Neighbour.

Then in the twenty seventh minute the hard working Henare burst through to add to Oldham's lead. This time John Braddish made no mistake with the conversion. Roughyeds 20 Thunder 2

Two minutes later Lee Doran powered his way through Thunders crumbling defence. Again Braddish converted. Just before half-time Phil Farrrell weighed in with another try and John Brafddish kicked his fourth goal of the game.

Half-Time Score : Oldham 32 Gateshead 2

Second-Half

Gateshead refused to lie down and pressed forawrd from the hooter. In the 51st minute Brian Henare foolishly tripped Neil Thornam and was sent off by referee Presley. He now looks set to miss the crucial away game against Huddersfield Giants in a fortnight.

Even with twelve men Gateshead's players were no match for the Roughyeds and six minutes later Phil Farrell received the ball from Neil Roden and headed for the try line. John Braddish converted the kick. Roughyeds 38 Thunder 6

Ten minutes later Jon Goddard scored his second try of the match, but Braddish missed the difficult conversion. Gateshead's players now looked defeated and two minutes later John Braddish chipped the ball forward, Joe McNicholas managed to dive on the ball and carried it over the line for his second try of the afternoon. This time Braddish converted the kick. Roughyeds 48 Thunder 2

Two minutes from time David Gibbons scored the final try of the match and John Braddish kicked his seventh goal of the match.

Final-Score : Oldham 54 Gateshead 2

Moan of the Match
1) Brian Henare's decision to trip Gateshead's scrum-half spoiled his fine performance. Let's hope he learns from his mistake !
2) The poor crowd ! 931 supporters is a complete and utter disgrace !
