A Year to Remember!

The Timbers pulled off a good season by doing two things. They had 11 returning players back from the 2003 season and were able to sign some good talent. The returning players were Josh Saunders GK, Brian Winters M, Scott Benedetti M, Hugo Alcaraze-Cuellar M, Aaron Heinzen D, Lee Morrison D, Gavin Wilkinson D, Byron Alvarez F, Dan (Dizzy) Antoniuk F and Jake Sagare M. Jake had 0ne goal that he scored in the second game of the season which was the winning goal of the match and he had  5 assist for the season. Jake played on the left at midfield and played only one match at forward where he showed some great skill making the keeper save many shots. The Timbers signed some new  players who really help this season. they were Alex Bengard M, Andrew Gregor M, Edwin Miranda D, David Henning D, Shawn Saunders D, Alan Gordon F  and Elfvin Bayard as Back up keeper. The Timbers got Scott Thompson on loan from the Los Angles Galaxy who was a key defender in the last part of the season, Other key players were Alan Gordon first season as a pro netting 17 goals tied for the most goals scored in the A-League and teamate Byron Alveraz had 16 goals. The assit leader of the A-League with 10 was Hugo Alcaraze-Cuellar. By doing this the Timbers won their first 6 matches where in the past they would start the season on a losing note. By winning their first two games of the season against Seattle they gained a birth in the US Open cup which is like the FA Cup in England. They won their first round match with the Utah Blitz but lost the next match to the upper division (MLS) San Jose. In mid season the Timbers won and lost half their matches and then went on to win or tie their last 10 matches of the season. So the Timbers were the top of the A-League Table with 18W 7L 3T for 58pts. The Champion of the A-League is determined by who wins the Championship game in the playoffs.  So even with the number one seed the Timbers lost in the first round of the playoffs.

The Timbers were the regular season Champions of the A-League. Alan Gordan was The Rookie of the Year of the A-League. Coach (Manager) Bobby Howe was named Coach of the Year in the A-League. Here is a write up at: http://aleague.uslsoccer.com/home/83177.html So the Timbers finished a great season!

The latest on Jake Sagare is he is on holiday in Argentina for some rest and may work out with a Club down there as he has some connections. If Jake wants to join another club he has to wait for the next transfer window at the end of December. Will he be back in Halifax Town? I do not know but from watching Jake play this season he has picked up allot of skill as he now is a threat with either foot where before he could only use his left foot.
