United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed he is hoping to bring West Bromwich Albion 'keeper Tomasz Kuszczak to Old Trafford. The Polish international would join the Red Devils as understudy to Edwin Van Der Sar.

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed his interest in signing West Bromwich Albion 'keeper Tomasz Kuszczak and is confident the club are close to reaching a deal to bring the 24-year-old to Old Trafford.

The Polish international would join the club as understudy for Edwin Van Der Sar, with goalkeeping duo Tim Howard and Ben Foster both shipped out on loan to Everton and Watford respectively.

"He's a good lad with Premiership experience and would make an excellent number two." said Fergie on Kuszczak, who moved to the Hawthorns from Hertha Berlin in 2004.

With West Brom confirming the signing of Pascal Zuberbuhler, the Swiss World Cup 'keeper who kept a tournament clean sheet, the path is seemingly clear for the two parties to complete the deal. However, Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace has stressed that no deal has been done as of yet.

"We've had talks but absolutely nothing has been agreed. We've said throughout the close season that it's our intention to hold on to key members of the first-team squad." said Peace.

United will be keen to tie up a deal as soon as possible with the club desperately needing an understudy for Van Der Sar following the temporary departure of Howard and Foster. Youngster Luke Steele is set to play a prominent role over pre-season to fill the void, with Foster only set for Vicarage Road after the tour of South Africa.
