Brian Kidd has joined the coaching staff of Yorkshire outfit Sheffield United. The former Manchester United assistant will be delighted to be involved in football again after fighting off prostate cancer.

Former Manchester United assistant Brian Kidd has joined the coaching staff of newly-promoted Sheffield United.

The ex-Reds forward is expected to play a leading role in the Brammal Lane backroom, though Blades boss Neil Warnock has been quick to squash speculation that Kidd has been brought in to replace his current right-hand man Stuart McCall.

"He's an extra body and brain, a very good and experienced one," said a delighted Warnock.

"It's a great appointment. We needed to bring somebody else in, I've been working on him for six weeks, he's the sort of person we need."

New Sunderland boss Roy Keane had approached Kidd with a job offer at the Stadium of Light, but the lure of the Premiership proved too much for the Englishman to resist.

Kidd spent ten seasons at Old Trafford, joining the club after a brief spell in charge of Preston. In 1998, he was appointed manager of Blackburn Rovers but the move into the hot seat proved too much for the 57-year-old, moving onto number two duties at Leeds before helping England with their Euro 2004 qualification campaign.

He, sadly, has spent two years away from the game after battling against prostate cancer, but his return is sure to boost Sheffield United's hopes of survival in the top-flight.
