Smith Joins Magpies for £6million

Manchester United have parted company with versatile forward Alan Smith. The former Leeds star has joined Newcastle for a deal worth £6million. The player has left Old Trafford in the search of regular first-team football; and is expected to play a major role for Sam Allardyce's men during the forthcoming campaign.

 

Newcastle United have completed the signing of Alan Smith for £6million.

The 26-year old has signed a lengthy five-year contract with the Magpies and will be hoping that the move to St.James' Park will lease new life into his career.

Smith controversially joined United, a club he had openly spoken of his hatred for, in 2004. Sir Alex Ferguson tried to mould the former Leeds star into a defensive midfielder but he rarely looked comfortable in the role and struggled to win regular first-team football with the club.

Smith recently returned to his more familiar attacking role but has netted only seven league goals since joining the club and has not got the chances many feel he deserved.

The Yorkshireman will now be hoping that he can get himself back into England contention with a run of first-team football in the North East.
