Despite dominating the match United have been dumped out of the FA Cup by Portsmouth who scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot. Tomasz Kuszczak was sent off for a professional foul after coming on to replace the injured Van Der Sar and Rio Ferdinand tokk over the gloves but could not stop the penalty being converted.
Sir Alex Ferguson named a very strong side and the team completely dominated the play and will feel hard done by as they had a stone wall penalty turned down, three efforts blocked on the line and hit the post with another effort.
The treble is off the agenda... But the topic of referees isn't!
Sir Alex Ferguson said after his side's hopes of repeating their 1999 Treble were extinguished: "The game was decided by the decision not to give us a penalty. They had great confidence to hang on knowing the referee was on their side. Lassana Diarra had eight or nine fouls in the match. It's incredible. I've got to agree with Arsene Wenger. Someone is going to get a serious injury in our game. He's had one himself with Eduardo. It's not a nice thing to talk about but, the treatment Ronaldo is getting, I'm worried about him."
Strong words from the boss after an eventful day.
