Fergie and Wenger on Sunday's league classic

Sir Alex Ferguson was relieved after his Manchester United side secured a 2-1 win over Arsenal. The result puts the Reds six points clear of Chelsea and nine ahead of the Gooners – making us overwhelming favourites to clinch the league championship. Fergie, however, conceded that his side were lucky to snatch all three points and end Arsenal’s challenge for honours.

"That was torture" said Sir Alex, speaking to Sky Sports.

"It was a big, big game today but we've got through it.

"The quality in the game today was outstanding. It was an incredible game.

"Arsenal were the better team in the first-half. We were nervous and the passing was poor.

"But after they scored we were fantastic. Van der Sar was superb.

"Arsenal were very unlucky not to get something from the game but we've still managed to win.

"We've got a week's rest now before the local derby at Blackburn. We're three wins from the title."

Meanwhile, a very miserable Arsene Wenger tried to put a brave face on his team's latest failure.

"We're used to conceding straight after scoring now," joked a dejected Frenchman.

He went onto admit that his side's hopes of silverware this season are over; but still reserved some praise for his under-achieving side.

"We are out of the title race, of course.

"We played with quality and spirit and I'm proud of our performance.

"We had plenty of chances to get something out of the game and I feel we were really unlucky not to win"
