Ronaldo returns but Villarreal frustrate United
He's back....

United’s defence of the European Cup kicked off with a disappointing 0-0 draw at home to Villarreal. The Spaniards defended stoutly and, whilst the introduction of Cristiano Ronaldo as a second-half substitute gave the Reds impetus, they couldn’t find a way through the Yellow Submarine’s backline. Both teams had chances – and Guille Franco nearly completed an amazing move for the visitors.
Ronaldo was given a superb reception from the United faithful as he made his return to first-team affairs.
His recent injury was probably the best thing that could have happened to him. It gave the fans time to forgive his pathetic summer behaviour and last season's 42-goal ace has the backing of the club's supporters once again.
It was Ronaldo's vibrant, 25-minute display which was the highlight for United as their Champions League campaign got underway with a goalless draw.
United enjoyed more possession throughout but struggled to carve out clear cut chances.
Villarreal's well-renowned defence was equal to the task as Nani and Carlos Tevez missed chances whilst, in the closing stages, surprise pick Johnny Evans hit the woodwork.
The La Liga side had their moments too and Franco almost broke the deadlock on the hour as his backheel clipped the post. After some quick, slick passing, Angel Lopez squared but the final touch missed the target by just an inch.
United will feel aggrieved after having an excellent penalty shout turned down before half-time - Ji-Sung Park dragged down by Joan Capdevila - and it was another evening for frustration for the Red Devils who have now won only won game (from the ninety minutes) in six attempts.
Next up it's Chelsea - and defeat for Fergie's men could leave us in the Premier League relegation zone.
