Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted that some of his younger players will play a prominent role as the Manchester United boss looks to achieve success on all fronts this season. Fergie isn’t expected to make any significant moves in the January transfer window – but his side could still achieve the ultimate ‘quintuple’ with United still going strong in Europe and the League Cup as we head into 2009.
United travel to the St.Mary's on Sunday to face Championship strugglers Southampton in the third round of the F.A Cup. If we avoid defeat, then the dream of winning an incredible five major trophies in one season will remain alive.
The Red Devils have already lifted the FIFA-recognised World Club Cup - and are set to do battle with Derby County over two-legs in the semi-finals of the League Cup.
It sounds an impossible task - and Ferguson is expected to go through the January transfer window without making any significant moves to bolster his talented squad.
The Scotsman is confident that United's bid to retain the league championship remains on track - and has suggested that some of the club's starlets will play a big role in the hunt for further success.
"Our pool of players is getting stronger as the younger lads mature and come into the squad, knowing they will perform.
"I am thinking of players like Jonny Evans, Rafael, Darron Gibson, Rodrigo Possebon, Danny Welbeck and Manucho.
"We have a good strong squad and I'm confident we have the men for the task. We are only handful of points behind the leaders and we have a good chance of winning the Premier League again."
Could be a tough one on Sunday......Saints are struggling, but I'm sure will raise their game.
