Clough won't be in charge for League Cup first-leg

Nigel Clough has followed in the footsteps of his late father by taking the manager's job at Derby County. The 42-year-old leaves Conference leaders Burton Albion to take the job at Pride Park – but he will not take up the reigns in time for Wednesday’s League Cup semi-final, first-leg against United.

Though his greatest success came as manager of fierce rivals Nottingham Forest, Brian Clough will always be a hero amongst the Derby faithful.

He took charge of the Rams in 1967 and, in six years at the helm, won the First Division title and led Derby into the semi-finals of the European Cup.

His son Nigel, an England international during his playing days, has spent nine years at the helm of Burton Albion and has achieved great things with the Staffordshire club.

The Brewers are currently thirteen points clear in the Conference and look on course to win Football League status for the first time in their history. In 2006, his side famously held Manchester United to a goalless draw in the FA Cup before the Red Devils won a replay 5-0.

Clough, however, will not take charge of Derby's League Cup clash with United on Wednesday evening. Academy manager David Lowe will run the show for that one - with Clough watching from the Pride Park stands.
