Rio to have another back scan

Rio Ferdinand will undergo another scan on his back injury after the 30-year-old missed out on United's sensational 3-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday. The defender was pencilled in for a return against the Pensioners – but failed to recover from a back problem which he picked up on Boxing Day at Stoke’s Britannia Stadium.

Ferdinand suffered a back spasm on Sunday morning meaning Jonny Evans continued his impressive run in the side alongside Nemanja Vidic.

"We are sending him for another scan because we want to get to the bottom of the problem," said a concerned Sir Alex Ferguson.

The England international is not expected to play any part in Wednesday's clash with Wigan - with the scan results likely to give the club a better indication of when the player can return to action.
