United march on

Manchester United booked their place in the fifth round of the F.A Cup on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Spurs, keeping alive the “mission impossible” of winning all five major trophies this season. Roman Pavlyuchenko headed the visitors ahead in the early exchanges, but goals from Paul Scholes and Dimitar Berbatov turned the tie on its head before the break.

Harry Redknapp didn't live up to his promise of fielding his "weakest possible line-up" - with a strong Spurs side lining up against United for this televised Cup encounter.

The visitors took a surprise lead after only five minutes. Russian frontman Pavlyuchenko shrugged off Nemanja Vidic to turn a fine glancing header passed Ben Foster.

United fought back well, however, thanks to some excellent attacking football.

Carlos Tevez went close on two occasions - Ben Alnwick denying the South American with a fine save, before Tevez saw a pile driver effort smash against the crossbar.

The equaliser came on 35 minutes as Paul Scholes hit a trademark long-range effort from a Reds corner; the ball deflecting off a Spurs leg or two before finding the back of the net.

The hosts then found the lead just sixty seconds later. Michael Carrick found Berbatov with a superb pass and the Bulgarian sent the Stretford End into raptures with a beautifully hit strike. £46million of Spurs talent combined to knock the North London club out of the competition.

Redknapp's men didn't really threaten an equaliser until the death when United's makeshift back-four, including substitute Adam Eckersley, had to deal with a series of dangerous set-pieces.

Sir Alex Ferguson will be delighted to progress to the fifth round, particularly as his squad is suffering from so many injuries at the moment. Danny Welbeck started the game, whilst there was a surprise debut for Zoran Tosic as he replaced Cristiano Ronaldo with eighteen minutes remaining.

Full Time - Manchester United 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur
Attendance - 75,014
