Woods claim VDS has NOT broken British record

Many press sources claimed Edwin van der Sar had smashed Chris Woods' British clean-sheet record after keeping out West Ham United’s frontline last Saturday. However, the ex-Rangers stopper has pointed-out that his record included games in all competitions – meaning VDS does not hold the record. The Dutchman leaked three goals in the FIFA Club World Cup match against Gamba Osaka.

Woods spent five years at Rangers and from November 1986 to January 1987 went an incredible 1,196 minutes of competitive football without conceding a goal.

VDS broke the English Football League record for minutes without conceding a goal following the hard-fought 1-0 win over Everton.

That followed United's 5-0 league win at West Brom - with the Dutch star becoming the first Premier League goalkeeper to keep eleven consecutive clean sheets.

The veteran continued his goalkeeping heroics at Upton Park as United sealed yet another 1-0 win - but, contrary to reports, he has arguably not broken Chris Woods' British record for minutes without conceding a goal.

VDS has now gone thirteen league games and 1,212 Premier League minutes without conceding a goal - but Woods has pointed-out that his British record remains very much intact.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Woods said: "Edwin's achievement in breaking the Football League record was an unbelievable feat but, as far as I'm concerned, he is still quite a way from beating my British record.

"Nobody seems to be counting the goal he conceded in Japan. It was obviously a Fifa-recognised fixture, so I would have thought that any goals conceded in that game would count towards a British record.

We are not just talking about league fixtures because my record covered both league and cup games.

"I should have had a bet on Edwin not breaking my record when the odds came out because he is still more than four games away from my total if you take into account the game in Japan.

"He might actually go on and beat it and, if he does, then I will be the first to congratulate him, but he is still some distance away from achieving it."

He's clinging to false hope so he may stay as record holder, but either way, VDS will break smash his record to pieces
