The Red Rebels face nerve-wracking final day

FC United fans were keeping their eye on not only the proceedings at Anfield on Tuesday evening; but also on a host of Northern Premier League scorelines. A number of clubs were playing their penultimate fixtures of the season ahead of Saturday’s final league games. The Red Rebels are in with a superb chance of qualifying for the play-offs which could provide promotion to the Conference North.

Bradford Park Avenue slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Leigh Genesis which was excellent news for FC supporters.

There were, however, big wins for Guiseley (2-0 v. North Ferriby United) and Nantwich Town (5-0 v. Boston United), whilst Ilkeston Town marched on with a 5-0 thrashing of Marine.

The result leaves FC United occupying the final play-off spot heading into the final day of the season. Karl Marginson's men host play-off rivals Bradford Park Avenue in one of the club's biggest games since its controversial formation back in 2005.

There are a host of complex permutations that will have fans sweating - but the bottom line is that a win for FC United will secure them a play-off spot unless Kendal Town chase down FC on goal difference and Nantwich and Guiseley avoid defeat. FC have matters in their own hands, however, and a confident win against BPA should be enough.

It promises to be a nail-biting final day which sees Kendal Town host Buxton, Hednesford Town entertain Leigh Genesis, Nantwich Town welcome Worksop Town and Guiseley play away at Whitton Albion.

The top-team in the division are promoted automatically, whilst those finishing from second to fifth will participate in the lottery of the play-offs.
