Manchester United's reserve-team got their pre-season underway with a 2-1 victory against AFC Fylde. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men faced a stern test against the newly-promoted Northern League club but left Kellamergh Park with the victory.
In torrential rain, goals from Tom Cleverley and Sam Hewson proved enough for Solskjaer's men to claim a hard-earned win.
A record crowd of 1,390 were at Kellamergh Park as Solskjaer took United's second-string to the Lancashire village of Warton.
The deadlock was broken on 39 minutes as some excellent build-up play from Cameron Stewart left Cleverley with the task of drilling home from ten yards.
United doubled their lead with fifteen minutes to go through Sam Hewson. The 20-year-old Bolton-born midfielder hit a superb piledriver effort from distance to the delight of the Reds bench.
Fylde didn't give up, however, and snatched a goal with eight minutes remaining through Michael Clark. The wind made sure that his corner found its way directly into the net; but Solskjaer's men clung on for the win.
Next up for United's second XI is a friendly at Rochdale; before a big test at Carrow Road against Norwich City.
