United XI win

The tenants beat the landlords as a Manchester United XI made up primarily of young and untested players secured a comfortable 2-0 win at local rivals Altrincham on Tuesday evening. A Joe Dudgeon strike and an own-goal from James Smith proved enough for the Red Devils.

With Sir Alex Ferguson giving the likes of Tom Cleverley and Ritchie de Laet a run-out against Valencia, Solskjaer named a young and largely inexperienced second string line-up for Tuesday evening's friendly at Moss Lane.

However, the young Reds kept up their impressive pre-season form with a deserved win against the non-league outfit. Over 1,700 were in attendance as Dudgeon broke the deadlock on thirteen minutes; with the result put beyond doubt in the closing stages courtesy of a Smith own-goal.

Solskjaer made no fewer tan seven second-half substitutions with the likes of Tom Heaton, Danny Simpson, Corry Evans and Febian Brandy some of the more recognisable names to be involved.

United's second string complete their pre-season preparations against vv Katwijk and Royal Antwerp before the Lancashire Senior Cup final against Bolton Wanderers.
