Welbeck strike seals Wolves win for 10-man United

An excellent strike from Danny Welbeck gave Manchester United safe passage to the fourth round of the Carling-sponsored League Cup on Wednesday evening. Despite fielding a weakened side and being reduced to 10-men before half-time, Sir Alex Ferguson’s men showed plenty of fight and determination to see off Mick McCarthy’s Wolverhampton Wanderers.
United played some decent early stuff, but were left with a
small mountain to climb shortly after the half-hour mark.
Michael Kightly made a clean break towards Tomasz Kuszczak's
goal, but as he approached the penalty area he was hauled down by Fabio Da
Silva. The Brazilian had prevented a superb goalscoring opportunity with his
actions, but the referee was left with little choice but to show a red card.
With United fielding a somewhat weakened side and with
Wolves boasting a numerical advantage, the Midlands
outfit bossed possession for long periods.
The Reds were still creating chances and Michael Owen, the
hero from Sunday, should have done better with a header from only yards out.
However, Kuszczak was largely the busier goalkeeper and pulled off a handful of
impressive stops - notably denying Kevin Doyle and ex-Red Sylvan Ebanks-Blake -
as he staked a claim for a run of competitive games.
United remained largely composed under pressure, however. An
unfamiliar backline soaked up plenty of Wolves pressure before Welbeck settled
the contest on 75 minutes. The promising young forward dispatched a superb
finish to beat Marcus Hahnemann after a neat one-two with strike partner Owen.
Cup holders United march on into the fourth round and fans
will surely be hoping that the club don't face Premier League opposition yet
again when the draw is made on Saturday.

A few stood out for me, Gibson was class, as was wellbeck and Ritchie de Laet looks like he could be Evra's understudy
