United 'keeper set for January move

Set for move

Young United stopper Ron-Robert Zieler has requested a loan move away from Old Trafford during the January transfer window. The 20-year-old looks unlikely to win first-team recognition with United in the near future, and is thus desperate to be loaned out to play regular senior football.

Despite Edwin Van Der Sar's injury and Ben Foster's questionable form, the young 'keeper hasn't had a sniff of first-team football this season.

The stopper is highly-rated and joined the Reds from FC Koln last year and is part of the German Under-20 squad competing in the World Cup in Egypt.

However, on the club level he is left battling it out with Ben Amos to be United's fourth choice goalkeeper, with VDS, Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak all well ahead of the young duo in the pecking order.

It therefore comes as no surprise that Zieler is keen to leave Old Trafford in the New Year in the hope of finding first-team football on a loan basis.

"I want to achieve the next step in my career and I have spoken to the manager about it." said the German.

"He really understands my point. I have always acted loyal to the club and I go on doing so. If possible I would like the chance to have a change of clubs this winter."

Zieler made two appearances on loan with Northampton Town last season, and is sure to attract interest from a host of Football League clubs during the next transfer window.

Makes sense for him to get some experience under his belt, and makes sense for the club also.

Hopefully he grows into a real contender for the #1 jersey.

Good luck to him but I don't think he'll be long at Old Trafford. From what I've seen of the reserves Amos is by far the better prospect.

Can't see him ever being a contender, to be honest. Even when VDS steps down, and if Foster or PIG moved on, you'd imagine Fergie would spend money elsewhere rather than throw a youngster in. I think Fergie prefers Amos too, as has been mentioned by Dawson.
