FC United march on in F.A Cup

Breakaway club FC United of Manchester claimed a famous win on Tuesday evening, stunning Stalybridge Celtic away from home to reach the fourth qualifying round of the F.A Cup. Jerome Wright fired home a superb strike on 34 minutes as the Red Rebels put themselves one win away from the first round proper.

FCUM produced a thoroughly workmanlike and tenacious display to claim a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Conference North outfit Stalybridge on Tuesday evening.

Wright's superb drive on 34 minutes was enough to give Karl Marginson's men an unexpected win and leave them just one victory away from the first round proper of the world's greatest Cup competition.

Around 1,000 travelling fans were left without fingernails as Stalybridge won a host of corners in the closing seconds, but FC held on for one of the biggest results in their short, colourful and controversial history.

The tie had gone to replay after a 3-3 draw at Gigg Lane on Saturday.

The Rebels face another Conference North side in the next round - travelling to Northwich Victoria on the 24^th of October.
