Terry's header harsh on Reds as Chelsea open up 5-point gap

A controversial goal from John Terry handed Chelsea all three points at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. United performed the better during a feisty and often disappointing contest, but the hosts bagged the only goal of the game and have opened up a five point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

The contest was decided on 75 minutes as Terry met Frank Lampard's free-kick with a trademark header that crept beyond Edwin van der Sar.

United's players were furious - protesting against the free-kick after Darren Fletcher had appeared to win the ball from the tumbling Ashley Cole. The goal itself was also dubious, with claims that Didier Drogba had been interfering with play from an offside position when Terry's header hit the net.

United's protestations became tiresome - referee Atkinson wasn't going to change his mind. However, they were understandable. The visitors had been the better side for long periods but were heavily frustrated in their endeavours to beat Peter Cech.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men will rue a handful of missed chances, with Wayne Rooney twice going agonisingly close from range. However, despite some neat moves from midfield, United - who were without Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Dimtiar Berbatov - lacked a cutting edge during a contest that failed to match its pre-match hype.

Fans will take heart from a spirited and determined display that warranted a point, if not all three. However, Chelsea ground out the kind of win that secures major honours. Carlo Ancelotti's men now sit five points clear at the top of the table as we head into yet another international break.

It's Everton next up for the Champions on the 21st. Sir Alex will be desperate to get back to winning ways.
