Plenty of early Chrismas cheer for Martin O'Neill at Old Trafford. Villa last beat United in 1999 with a League Cup win, but the Midlands outfit have waited 26 years to snatch maximum points at Old Trafford.
United will be bitterly disappointed by their first league defeat at home this season, especially after Premier League pacesetters Chelsea had dropped points at home to Everton earlier with a 3-3 draw.
United were not at full strength due to the continuing injury problems and despite lots of early possession could not break through a resoloute Villa defence.
Gabriel Agbonlahor broke the deadlock on 21 minutes as he nodded home Ashley Young's cross - and defensive heroics follows from O'Neill's mature side.
Wayne Rooney hit the bar in the first half when a weaker shot would probably have found the net! He was also booked for diving as the Reds grew increasingly frustrated.
No complaints - Aston Villa deserved their victory. Their fans celebrated at the end as if they had won the Champions League, but to be fair they have now beaten United, Chelsea and Liverpool this season and are boast strong credentials for a fourth placed finish.
United have the chance to bounce back on Tuesday when Wolves come to Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson will demand nothing less than a convincing home victory.
There was, as usual, controversy over the added time, but to be fair even if the referee had added 13 minutes it is doubtful if the result would have changed. It was one of those days for the Red Devils, who now sit three points behind Chelski.
