Two pens !

Manchester United claimed a crucial 3-1 win over Spurs on Saturday as the Red Devils returned to the Premier League summit. Ryan Giggs bagged two penalties and Nani fired home as the Red Devils piled pressure on Chelsea ahead of their home clash with Stoke on Sunday.

If Chelsea fail to beat Stoke on Sunday, United will remain top of the league with two top flight fixtures remaining.

United claimed a deserved win over Spurs on Saturday lunchtime as Spurs' chances of sealing a European Cup spot took a major blow.

The Red Devils broke the deadlock on 58 minutes from the penalty spot. Benoit Assou-Ekotto fouled Patrice Evra and Ryan Giggs stepped up to slot the ball home from twelve yards.

Giggs' opener followed a first-half in which United had played the better football but had failed to break down Spurs' resolute back line.

Ledley King pulled the visitors level on twenty minutes to go. United's defending from a Spurs corner was soft and injury-prone King rose highest to guide a header beyond Edwin van der Sar.

The thousands of travelling North Londoners were joyous - but their celebrations were shortlived. United pulled back ahead eleven minutes later as Nani continued his surge in form.

Substitute Kiko Macheda came off the bench to stake a claim for a first-team spot. His fine pass found Nani in the box and the Portuguese winger lifted an excellent strike beyond the out-rushing Gomes.

The game was over on 86 minutes as Wilson Palacios bundled over Nani. Giggs stepped up and fired home another penalty as Sir Alex Ferguson's men piled the pressure on Chelsea ahead of Sunday's crucial Premier League clash.

Definite penalties and in the second half Spurs were well beaten.

Agree they were both pens (and well taken too) and I thought we outplayed them all game, good performance. We still struggled again to score in open play and berba was ineffective, he tried his heart out to be fair though. Awesome chip by Nani who I thought was gonna have a wrong option afternoon again.

Love the three points, come on Stoke!

Perhaps a somewhat lucky win in hindsight but that is what it is all about at this stage of the campaign. Now, the aim is for Chelsea to slip up against Stoke. I don't know why people aren't more optimistic – I'm hopeful the Scousers will do us a big favour next weekend even if Stoke cannot do the business today. I'm confident that four points could do it for us from here!!
