Ferdinand, Carrick and Rooney set for South Africa

As expected, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney all made Fabio Capello's cut and have been named in England's 23-man World Cup squad. Leighton Baines, Scott Parker, Michael Dawson, Tom Huddlestone, Adam Johnson, Theo Walcott and Darren Bent are the unlucky seven to miss out.

Walcott was arguably the most high profile omission from Capello's final 23-man squad.

The Arsenal youngster, a surprise inclusion in 2006, has been left at home alongside Johnson, Dawson, Parker, Huddlestone, Baines and Bent.

Ferdinand, Carrick and Rooney are all expected to play a central role in England's campaign in South Africa.

England's opening game is against the USA before Capello's side take on Algeria and then Slovenia.
