England skipper Rio Ferdinand has been ruled out of the World Cup this summer after a collision with Emile Heskey. Scouser Steven Gerrard will now don the captain's armband as England's preparations for their opener against the USA take a major blow.
Though ManUtdWeb have often labelled £30million defender Ferdinand as over-rated, there can be no doubt that his absence will be a huge blow for England.
The centre-back will miss the tournament after suffering ligament damage and now faces a six-week spell on the sidelines.
31-year-old Ferdinand was looking to skipper his country to international glory this summer, but will now be replaced by Spurs defender Michael Dawson.
Steven Gerrard will now be England skipper for the tournament with United frontman Wayne Rooney expected be named vice-captain.
