New signing

Despite his form in recent warm-up games, new Manchester United frontman Javier Hernandez had to settle for a place in the bench in the World Cup’s opening game. He came on after 73 minutes and six minutes later his country equalised to seal a 1-1 draw.

Mexico dominated the first-half against the hosts - playing some impressive, expansive attacking football.

However, the South Americans were left to rue a host of missed opportunities as South Africa broke the deadlock on 55 minutes.

Siphiwe Tshabalala's awesome finish completed a fine attacking move for Bafana Bafana to the delight of the majority of the 84,000 crowd.

Mexico deserved an equaliser, however. It came with eleven minutes remaining as Rafael Marquez struck.

The game was a thrilling start to the tournament and neither side will be too disappointed with the result.

Well taken goal against les Frogs.

looks like a bright, sharp, quick player with a good touch and good nerve.
