VDS retirement could hinge on FA Cup success

Edwin van der Sar's future in the professional game could hinge on United's success in the FA Cup, according to goalkeeping coach Eric Steele.
The Dutchman looks likely to hang up his gloves at the end of the season - but is also desperate to fulfil a career ambition and win the world's oldest cup competition!

Van der Sar, who will celebrate his 41st birthday in 2011, is widely tipped to retire at the end of the season.

The veteran remains an integral part of Sir Alex Ferguson's squad, but the Red Devils boss is reportedly expecting the former Fulham man to bow out come May.

Steele has said that he expects the "sensible and intelligent" van der Sar will not need be told when to quit the game - and expects him to retire at the end of the campaign.

However, Steele has revealed that the Dutch shot stopper is determined to add an FA Cup winners' medal to his collection.

"It is a big target for him," said Steele, commenting on the 'keeper's desire to win the famous trophy.

United last won the FA Cup in 2004 with victory over Millwall at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium. Tim Howard was between the sticks and was replaced by Roy Carroll on 84 minutes as the Reds cruised to a three goal victory.

Meanwhile, FC United of Manchester are in FA Cup action on Saturday at the third qualifying round stage. The Rebels face Norton & Stockton Ancients.
