Javier Hernandez fired Wayne Rooney off the back pages and himself onto them with a fine brace as United claimed a narrow win at Stoke City. The travelling Red Army went ballistic as the Mexican fired home the winning goal with only four minutes remaining after Tuncay's thunderbolt had restored parity moments earlier.
After a bizarre week centred on Wayne Rooney's future, United bounced back to winning ways in the Premier League with three crucial points at the Britannia Stadium.
The superb Hernandez turned home the winning strike with only four minutes left. The South American drilled the ball home right in front of the travelling United supporters as the Red Devils extended their unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign.
United's young World Cup star was a thorn in Stoke's side all afternoon and he broke the deadlock on 33 minutes. Nani's cross was nodded across goal by Nemanja Vidic and the diminutive frontman, with his back to goal, flicked a superb header home with the back of his noggin!
The visitors were worthy of their first-half lead, but Stoke fans were left fuming at the interval after Gary Neville avoided a red card. Having already been booked, the full-back took Matthew Etherington out with a poor late challenge but, somehow, avoided a second yellow card.
Tony Pulis' Potters improved after the interval and thought they had snatched a sensational draw when Tuncay struck with only nine minutes later. Paul Scholes gave the ball away and the Turkish international received the ball on the right flank, cutting into the penalty box and unleashing an amazing left-footed shot into the top corner of Edwin van der Sar's net.
Despite Scholes' error, United surged forward looking to re-find their lead. They found it with only minutes remaining. After some good build-up play from Dimitar Berbatov, Scholes and Patrice Evra, Hernandez was in the right place at the right time to turn the ball home from inside the six yards box.
The away end went ballistic, United celebrated and the media had to quickly delete their planned column inches about the Reds, once again, surrendering a lead late on. Next up for the Reds is Tuesday's League Cup clash at home to Wolves before Spurs visit Old Trafford.
The result lifted United up to second in the Premier League table ahead of Arsenal's visit to Manchester City.
